This is it! The MusicianTUBE website is finally online and so is the first blog post. It took me quite a while to get this far but here it is…
I’ve been playing with this MusicianTUBE idea in my head for years now but I’ve somehow never found the time to do it. Maybe it was the fear from actually doing it? Could be, I don’t know. But then again they say you just have to start putting out content and then learn along the way. So, let’s do it!
The whole idea of the MusicianTUBE website is pretty simple
My dream is that someday the MusicianTUBE website would be the go-to site for musicians of all ages and skill levels where they can share the knowledge and help each other on their musical journey.
And the story behind the slogan “Just You And The Music.”?
By sharing the knowledge we help our peers to remove as many obstacles as possible from their path as a musician so at the end hopefully there are just the two most important things left: the musician and his music.
At the moment the MusicianTUBE website consists of two major parts: the Blog and The Well. The Well is a constantly growing collection of small useful informations and tips divided into six different areas of musician’s activity. In every area there’s a form where you can send me your own tips so I can share them on the site. In my Blog I then try to go deeper on some of those areas and specific topics. The website will be supported with the MusicianTUBE YouTube channel and perhaps later on even with the MT podcast. I’m guitarist myself so I’ll also put some – hopefully helpful – guitar stuff on the site.
Let’s start from the beginning
Because this topic that we want to talk about is huge I’d like to focus on the basics first and then with time maybe move on to more intermediate and advanced stuff. I’ll keep the posts and videos as short as I can (bite size pieces) and also try to express myself in a simpler way so younger readers and those who do not speak English that well can still understand what I’m talking about. Here is the first lesson for all non-native English speakers: try to learn English as good as you can because if you search for the information that you need (especially online, books, articles, etc.), it is very likely going to be in English. Trust me, I come from Slovenia and if I’d have to depend only upon the information for musicians in Slovenian language when I started making music I’d probably be lost completely! Not to mention that before 1991 when I started to learn and play music we were a part of former Yugoslavia where the problem was even worse. But enough about that and back to the subject…
A lot of schooled musicians probably won’t agree with some or even a lot of the things I’m going to say and do here but that’s ok! I’ve had some basic music education as a kid but in essence I’m an autodidact (a self-taught musician) so I do and explain things as I understand them. Maybe that will work or you, maybe not. Maybe some things won’t be 100% correct – it can happen! That’s why you should always double-check everything I am (or someone else is) trying to teach you!
Thinking with your own head
I’m also NOT going to show you how to EXACTLY do things! Are you familiar with the quote: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”? I’ll try to inspire you to THINK with your own head! Crazy, huh?! Throughout the past years I’ve noticed that nobody wants to think anymore. There’s more of “Painting by numbers” kind of mentality out there. An example: did you know that more than half of the guitar tabs that are online (and rated with 4 stars or more!) are wrong?! Yes!!! And people just download and learn them as they are and rate 4 or 5 stars! It’s hard to believe that but it’s true! And why? Because nobody apparently listens to himself playing anymore. Or tries to play what he/she learned along with the original. If they would, maybe they’d notice that something doesn’t sound right. Double-check everything, remember?! We will go deeper into this subject down the road…
At the end of this first post let me give you one more for the road: there is no ONE RIGHT WAY to do music! At the bottom line there is only one rule: if it sounds right – it IS right! Sometimes it doesn’t even sound quite right but it FEELS right!
It’s up to you (and later on to your listeners) to decide…
Now, go and make some great music!
